In many situations, such as on coal conveyors, the dusty environment prohibits the use of conventional smoke and heat type fire detectors.

Both Linear Heat Detecting cable and Infra-red (IR) monitors can be successfully employed

Three types of fire initiation should be considered, all of which are dealt with in our "Conveyor System Fire Protection – Overview" *.

By suspending the Linear Heat Detection Cable on a catenary support central to the conveyor and about 1 – 1.5 metres above the conveyor.

b)  Roller Bearings - using Linear Heat Detectors

With conveyors employing idler rollers, it is very often an overheating bearing combined with a deposit of combustible material which is the initial cause of fires.

Linear Heat Detection Cable Systems provide an economic answer as a single length of cable can be arranged to monitor a large number of bearing housings.

For each "zone" of Linear Heat Detection the System employs a length of Linear Heat Detection Cable with a zone monitor mounted adjacent to or at one end of the Zone.

The Zone Monitors provide actuation signals for the operation of sprinklers or other extinguishants and repeat contacts for shutdown and signalling to a control area.
